US Air Force Selects Xos Technology to Develop Field Charging Solutions
US-based electric commercial vehicle and mobile energy solutions manufacturer Xos confirmed on August 24 that it has been awarded a contract by the US Air Force to develop a specialized mobile charging system for military electrified support equipment and vehicles. The contract requires Xos to adapt its existing Xos Hub, a grid-independent mobile battery energy storage system, to deliver reliable, high-capacity charging in demanding field environments.
The Xos Hub was originally designed for commercial markets, featuring rapid deployment and no requirement for fixed infrastructure. This adaptation will focus on enhancing the system’s reliability and durability to meet military application demands. Xos CEO Dakota Semler stated that the award represents a strategic inflection point for the company and validates the capability of the Xos mobile energy platform to meet stringent mission requirements.
Military Electrification Trend Drives Demand for Mobile Charging
The US Department of Defense is the largest institutional energy consumer in the United States, and its electrification transition is accelerating. The US Army has announced plans to electrify its entire non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2035 and intends to deploy microgrids across its installations. Against this backdrop, the US Air Force’s collaboration with Xos reflects the military’s urgent need for mobile charging solutions, particularly in field environments where fixed charging infrastructure is lacking. The mobility and flexibility of mobile energy storage systems are critical in such settings.
