Robert Clifford, Chairman of Incat Tasmania, stated at the departure ceremony that the sailing of Hull 096 represents not only a defining moment for the company but also a symbol of the future of sustainable maritime transport. He emphasized that the ferry demonstrates the enormous potential of large-scale battery-electric technology in commercial operations and underscores the team’s leadership in technical innovation and engineering capabilities.

Clifford noted that Hull 096 was originally designed as an LNG-powered vessel. However, in 2023, South American ferry operator Buquebus decided to convert it into a fully battery-electric design. This shift reflects the maritime industry’s urgent need for decarbonization and lays the foundation for the future development of large electric vessels.

Heavy Lift Vessel Overcomes Navigation Challenges to Complete Complex Loading Operation

The Black Marlin, responsible for transporting Hull 096, arrived in Tasmania at the end of July but faced delays due to a blockage in the Strait of Hormuz. The heavy lift vessel partially submerged using its ballast water system, allowing the ferry to safely maneuver onto its deck before deballasting to secure the vessel for transport. This loading operation, completed in Tasmania, is considered one of the most complex maritime engineering feats ever undertaken in the region.

Upon arrival in South America, Hull 096 will undergo final commissioning and acceptance procedures before entering regular service on the River Plate. Incat Tasmania also announced the launch of an aluminum electric shipbuilding program at its Hobart shipyard, aiming to construct five large sustainable vessels to further advance the industrialization of electric ships.

While specific technical specifications of Hull 096—such as battery capacity, range, and passenger capacity—have not been disclosed, its status as the world’s largest battery-electric ferry provides a concrete example for the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts. Buquebus has not explained the specific reasons for switching to battery power, but industry observers widely attribute the decision to increasingly stringent environmental regulations in South America and fluctuations in fuel costs.
