APX Platform Integrates AP1000 and AP300 Technology Frameworks

Westinghouse Electric Company and engineering technology firm Amentum recently announced the signing of multiple cooperation agreements to jointly advance the development of the APX nuclear technology platform. The APX platform serves as a unified technology framework for Westinghouse’s AP1000 and AP300 reactors, which share verified engineering designs, critical equipment, fuel design, licensing strategies, and supply chains. Westinghouse stated that the AP1000 reactor is already capable of commercial deployment, catering to large-scale grid demands, while the AP300 targets markets requiring approximately 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The company aims to expand the application of smaller-scale reactors, including for industrial power and remote area supply.

Westinghouse CEO Dan Sumner noted that the company is continuing to invest in the APX platform. Through collaboration with Amentum, the goal is to accelerate the licensing process for the AP300 small modular reactor (SMR) with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) while enhancing the engineering and delivery capabilities of the AP1000 to support large-scale construction of 1 gigawatt (GW) nuclear units in the future. Sumner emphasized that the core advantage of the APX platform lies in leveraging the proven technology of the AP1000, including passive safety systems, engineering design, and supply chains, which is expected to reduce development risks for new reactors and improve standardization and large-scale deployment efficiency.

Amentum to Support AP300 Licensing Process

Amentum will assist Westinghouse in advancing the NRC licensing process for the AP300 to shorten the review timeline. Amentum CEO John Heller stated that the company possesses engineering capabilities covering the full lifecycle of nuclear projects. As global demand for stable baseload power continues to rise, the collaboration will help accelerate the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies and enhance energy security. Heller pointed out that nuclear power, as a low-carbon and stable baseload energy source, will play a critical role in future energy transitions and support the power demands of high-consumption industries such as artificial intelligence (AI).

Westinghouse highlighted that the design philosophy of the APX platform maximizes technology sharing. The AP300 and AP1000 are highly consistent in key components, including reactor cooling systems, fuel assemblies, and safety control systems. This standardized design not only helps reduce manufacturing costs but also shortens construction and commissioning times. Currently, the AP1000 has achieved commercial operation in countries such as China and the United States, accumulating extensive operational experience that provides a solid technical foundation for the development of the AP300.
