Gemini AI Assistant Officially Launches in Ojai Robotaxi

On July 29, Waymo announced the official integration of Google’s Gemini AI assistant into its Ojai robotaxi, which is purpose-built for ride-hailing services. This marks the first time the company has incorporated third-party AI technology into its in-vehicle interaction system. The Gemini assistant, branded as "Gemini in Waymo," allows passengers to activate it via voice or touchscreen to control the cabin environment, check trip details, and ask general knowledge questions.

Examples provided by Waymo demonstrate that passengers can issue commands such as "Set the air conditioning to 65 degrees," "Where are the best coffee shops nearby?" or "What is the history of that monument?" Gemini responds with natural voice interactions. Unlike traditional in-car voice systems, Gemini supports continuous conversation rather than being limited to preset commands. Waymo emphasized that Gemini is entirely separate from the Waymo Driver system, which handles autonomous driving, and cannot control vehicle movement or access real-time driving data. It can only execute parking commands at the passenger’s request.

To safeguard privacy, Gemini is disabled by default and only activates when passengers explicitly enable it. Waymo stated that this design allows Gemini to act as a "friendly passenger," providing conversational assistance while the Waymo Driver focuses on the road. Currently, Gemini in Waymo is available in beta and limited to the Ojai model.

Tri-Screen Dynamic Interface Emphasizes Personalized Experience

Waymo simultaneously introduced a new tri-screen dynamic interface, the first comprehensive redesign of its in-vehicle display system in years. The new interface centers on a "lean-back ride" design philosophy, using dynamic elements to proactively display trip information, music controls, and cabin settings. The standout "choreographed tri-screen experience" adjusts content based on passenger seating to avoid the redundancy of traditional single-screen setups.

For instance, when a single passenger sits in the right rear seat, their screen displays full control options, while the other two screens may show simplified trip status or ambient music players. Additionally, the new interface includes a "Calm Mode," which dims the screens to display only essential trip information, catering to passengers who prefer minimal distraction. Waymo noted that these updates do not affect autonomous driving performance but focus on enhancing ride comfort and convenience.

Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service Continues to Expand

Waymo currently operates over 3,000 autonomous vehicles across more than 11 cities in the U.S., completing approximately 500,000 paid rides per week. Earlier this month, Waymo officially launched fully driverless operations in Las Vegas and plans to expand to additional cities. The Ojai model began offering rides in May, with both its hardware and software designed specifically for ride-hailing. This update further enhances its intelligent features.

In contrast, Tesla’s Robotaxi service remains limited to a geofenced area in Austin, Texas. Waymo’s introduction of the Gemini AI assistant and tri-screen interface underscores the evolution of autonomous driving services from merely ensuring safety to delivering intelligent in-vehicle experiences. As service scales grow, optimizing passenger experience has become a new competitive focus for providers.

Privacy and Safety Design Prioritized

Waymo placed particular emphasis on privacy protections when launching Gemini in Waymo. Since Gemini lacks access to vehicle driving data and is disabled by default, operating only when passengers actively enable it, it does not compromise the safety of the autonomous driving system. Waymo stated that this design ensures Gemini functions solely as a conversational assistant without interfering with the Waymo Driver.

Additionally, the new interface’s Calm Mode reflects Waymo’s attention to passenger needs. Whether riders prefer interacting with AI or a quiet environment, the system provides tailored experiences. As autonomous driving technology becomes more widespread, balancing intelligence with privacy protection will be a critical challenge for providers.
