US Army Launches Uncrewed Hybrid-Electric Resupply Vehicle Procurement
The US Army has formally signed an 18-month contract with electric vehicle startup Harbinger Motors and defense contractor American Rheinmetall to deliver the first batch of uncrewed hybrid-electric resupply vehicles. These vehicles will autonomously perform resupply missions in high-risk combat zones, using self-navigation technology to travel between frontline troops and rear bases, thereby reducing soldiers' exposure to enemy fire. The contract is led by American Rheinmetall, with team members including autonomous driving technology provider Forterra and human-machine interface developer Primordial Labs.
Harbinger Motors stated in a press release that these resupply vehicles will integrate hybrid power systems, autonomous driving technology, and voice control to enhance interaction efficiency between soldiers and the system. In May of this year, American Rheinmetall noted that the collaboration focuses on autonomous tactical wheeled vehicles, contested-area logistics resupply, and robotic platforms that meet the US Army’s requirements for autonomy and human-machine teaming. This partnership marks a significant shift in the US Army’s logistics resupply model, with autonomous resupply platforms poised to become standard equipment on future battlefields.
Hybrid Power and Autonomous Technology as Key Factors
The US Army has long maintained a cautious stance on the use of electric vehicles in combat, primarily due to concerns over battery safety and vehicle structural limitations. However, with the rapid advancement of autonomous driving and robotic technologies, hybrid-electric vehicles have emerged as a new direction for military exploration. The Department of Defense’s 2023 Other Transactions Guide provides an accelerated pathway for procuring civilian technologies, emphasizing reduced dependence on diesel. The guide cites a 2022 assessment indicating that Defense Department vehicles spend an average of 75% of their time idling, wasting significant fuel and creating logistical bottlenecks.
The war in Ukraine has further highlighted the vulnerabilities of traditional energy systems. In early 2022, a 40-mile-long Russian military convoy stalled due to fuel shortages, becoming a textbook example of energy resupply failure in modern warfare. To address this issue, Rheinmetall’s parent company has proposed deploying hundreds of modular green hydrogen microgrids across Europe, enabling drones and ground robots in remote areas to refuel with hydrogen on-site, thereby avoiding high-risk ground transportation or airdrops.
The US Army has also begun equipping vehicles with battery-powered anti-idling kits to reduce fuel consumption and thermal signatures. Harbinger Motors’ range-extended HC model, which uses an onboard gas tank to recharge its battery, offers a maximum range of 500 miles, aligning with the Army’s demands for extended range and low noise. This model can also deliver up to 15 kilowatts of power via an onboard AC inverter, replacing traditional diesel generators and further enhancing battlefield logistics flexibility.
Harbinger’s Technological Advantages and Market Strategy
Founded in 2021, Harbinger Motors specializes in the medium-duty electric truck market (Class 4-6) and has developed a customizable electric chassis platform. The company began mass production in April 2025, with 4,690 vehicles ordered and an order book valued at $500 million. It also completed a $100 million Series B funding round, with investors including the Capricorn Technology Impact Fund, Leitmotif Ventures, and existing shareholder Tiger Global. Harbinger’s HC series not only serves as a transport vehicle but also functions as a mobile power station, meeting diverse needs in both military and commercial markets.
To address range anxiety, Harbinger introduced a range-extended HC model that boosts its range to 500 miles through hybrid power design while reducing thermal signatures and noise, enhancing battlefield stealth. This technology aligns with the US Army’s recent push for battery-powered anti-idling kits, demonstrating the potential of hybrid power in both military and commercial applications.
Harbinger’s strategy has also proven effective in the commercial market. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the company’s sales grew compared to the third quarter, making it one of the few US automakers to maintain growth after the federal electric vehicle tax credit expired in September 2023. Harbinger’s CEO has noted that demand for medium-duty electric trucks remains stable, while Tesla’s Cybertruck is positioned in the Class 2-3 segment, and the Semi heavy-duty truck has yet to achieve large-scale production after years of delays, leaving significant market space for Harbinger. Additionally, Daimler Truck is promoting the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro bus, which features a fuel cell and battery hybrid power system, indicating that range-extended technology is becoming a new trend in electric commercial vehicles.
Currently, Harbinger and Rheinmetall’s uncrewed resupply vehicles have entered the testing phase, with plans for real-world validation at US domestic facilities. The vehicles feature a flatbed design capable of autonomously unloading containers, adapting to complex terrain. As the contract progresses, the US Army’s logistics resupply model is set for a major transformation, with autonomous, low-risk electric resupply platforms poised to become core battlefield equipment.
