Autonomy Timeline Delayed Again as Tesla Prioritizes High-Volume Models
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced during the Q2 2026 earnings call on July 22 that Tesla Semi’s autonomous driving feature is expected to be achieved "by the end of this year or early next year." However, Musk immediately added that Tesla is currently focusing its autonomous driving development efforts on high-volume models such as the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybercab, with Tesla Semi’s autonomy development "taking a backseat for about the next six months."
Responding to a question from LightShed analyst Walter Piecyk, Musk emphasized that autonomous driving technology will "dramatically improve safety and comfort for truck drivers" and noted a severe shortage of truck drivers in the United States, suggesting that autonomy could help alleviate the labor shortage. However, Tesla’s current Full Self-Driving (FSD) system still requires a driver to monitor the vehicle and cannot operate without human supervision.
Tesla Semi Production Progresses Slowly, Autonomy Features Face Setbacks
The Tesla Semi was first unveiled in November 2017, when Tesla demonstrated "Enhanced Autopilot" and convoy mode, promising production by 2019. However, the production timeline was repeatedly delayed, and only a small batch of vehicles was delivered to PepsiCo at the end of 2022. At the time, no mention was made of autonomous driving features. Tesla later quietly removed references to convoy mode from its official website.
In April of this year, Tesla Semi assembly began at the Giga Nevada factory, which has a designed annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles. However, Tesla acknowledged during the earnings call that by the end of 2026, the Tesla Semi would still represent "a very small percentage" of its total vehicle fleet. Musk stated that the development of Tesla Semi autonomy has fallen behind schedule, primarily due to resource allocation toward models with greater market potential.
Competitors Accelerate Deployment as Tesla Lags in Autonomous Mileage
Compared to Tesla’s progress, autonomous trucking startup Aurora has already begun hauling freight on Texas highways with driverless trucks. As of March 2026, Aurora had accumulated over 250,000 driverless miles and plans to deploy more than 200 autonomous trucks by the end of the year. In contrast, Tesla has accumulated 380,000 miles of unsupervised autonomous testing over the past year, but these tests have been limited to low-speed, geo-fenced areas.
Tesla’s delays in autonomous driving technology are not new. According to MuskOmeter, which has tracked 94 public predictions made by Elon Musk, only 8 (9%) were delivered on time, while 46 failed outright. Among these, self-driving-related promises have repeatedly missed deadlines, including a 2016 claim that Tesla would achieve fully autonomous coast-to-coast driving from Los Angeles to New York by the end of 2017, and a 2019 pledge that FSD would be "feature-complete" by year-end—neither of which materialized. In January of this year, Musk again predicted that FSD would receive approval in Europe and China "next month," but no progress has been reported to date.
Future of Autonomous Trucking Remains Uncertain as Driver Shortage Persists
Musk has emphasized that autonomous driving technology will improve working conditions for truck drivers. However, in 2022, Tesla removed all references to autonomy from Tesla Semi marketing materials, a move interpreted as an effort to avoid resistance from drivers and fleet managers. This year, Musk has shifted his messaging to focus on "enhancing safety and comfort," though he has not clarified whether drivers will still be required to monitor the vehicle.
Despite Musk’s announcement that Tesla Semi autonomy will be achieved by the end of this year or early 2027, analysts remain skeptical, given Tesla’s history of delays. Autonomous trucking still faces multiple challenges, including technological maturity, regulatory approval, and market acceptance, making it unlikely to replace traditional truck drivers in the near term.
