Tesla Adds 2.4 kW Vehicle-to-Load Capability to Model Y Premium with $80 Adapter

Tesla has officially enabled vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality for Model Y Premium owners in the US and Puerto Rico, offering up to 2.4 kW output via an $80 adapter. Tesla Enables Vehicle-to-Load for Model Y Premium

On August 15, Tesla officially activated vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality for Model Y Premium owners in the US and Puerto Rico. Owners can now draw up to 2.4 kilowatts of power at 120 volts and 20 amps from their vehicle’s battery using an $80 accessory adapter. The adapter must be paired with Tesla’s Gen 3 Mobile Connector and can be purchased as an add-on during vehicle configuration or separately from the Tesla Shop.

Currently, only the Model Y Premium, Model Y Performance, and Cybertruck support this feature. The Model Y Standard and all Model 3 variants are excluded. Tesla has stated that early production Model Y Juniper editions—later rebranded as Premium—may not support the V2L adapter unless they include updated internal power conversion hardware. Tesla has not released specific production batches or vehicle identification number (VIN) ranges, leaving owners to verify compatibility on their own.

V2L Functionality and Limitations

The Tesla V2L adapter attaches to the end of the Gen 3 Mobile Connector. To use it, owners plug the connector into the vehicle’s charging port, then connect the adapter to the other end, providing a standard 20-amp household outlet. Tesla notes that the 2.4 kW output can power camping equipment, small refrigerators, job site power tools, or space heaters, though it is only sufficient for basic electrical needs.

Compared to competitors, Tesla’s V2L output is notably lower. Hyundai has included V2L functionality in the Ioniq 5 since 2021, offering 3.6 kW of power and providing an interior outlet and charge-port adapter as standard equipment. Kia’s EV6 and EV9 also feature 3.6 kW V2L capability. Ford’s F-150 Lightning delivers 2.4 kW in its base model and up to 9.6 kW in extended-range versions, with built-in outlets in the truck bed and front trunk. Chevrolet’s Silverado EV offers up to 10.2 kW of V2L output.

Differences Between V2L and Powershare

Tesla’s V2L functionality differs significantly from its Powershare feature. Powershare is currently exclusive to the Cybertruck, providing up to 11.5 kW of output and supporting vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities. The Cybertruck has been approved as a V2G asset by California utility PG&E, enabling it to serve as a home backup power source for three days or more. Tesla’s official Powershare page explicitly states that Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y do not support Powershare.

Analysis suggests that Tesla’s V2L offering targets lightweight applications such as camping or temporary power needs, rather than serving as a home backup solution during outages. While Tesla’s Model Y Performance, released in October 2025, includes bidirectional charging hardware, the rollout of functionality remains constrained by model strategy. Tesla has not explained why the Model Y Standard and Model 3 are excluded from V2L capability. Observers speculate that this decision may be tied to protecting Tesla’s Powerwall home battery business, though Tesla has not confirmed this reasoning.

Enabling V2L does not currently affect vehicle battery warranties, but the long-term impact on battery lifespan remains unclear. Tesla states that the V2L adapter’s output is sufficient for basic power needs, though real-world performance will vary and requires individual assessment by owners.
