EV Market Share Hits Record High as Overall Sales Surge

In the second quarter of 2026, Sweden’s electric vehicle market achieved significant growth, with plugin EVs—including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models—reaching a 67.0% market share, up 4.5 percentage points from 62.5% in Q2 2025. This marks a new all-time high. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 42.0% of the market, a substantial increase from 36.2% in the same period last year, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) held a 25.0% share, slightly down from 26.4% in Q2 2025. Overall auto sales totaled 79,891 units, reflecting a 22% year-over-year increase.

BEV sales surged by 42% year-over-year, and PHEV sales grew by 16%, underscoring the expanding demand for electric vehicles. The Volvo EX40 led the BEV segment with 3,334 units sold, securing its position as the top-selling model for the fourth consecutive quarter. The Tesla Model Y followed with 2,450 units, while the Volvo EX30 ranked third with 1,905 units. Analysts noted that new or refreshed models from Kia, BMW, Toyota, and Volvo contributed to the growth in BEV sales.

New Models Enter Market, Intensifying Competition

The second quarter saw the introduction of several new models in Sweden, further intensifying market competition. The refreshed BMW iX3 sold 1,198 units, a significant increase from the first quarter. Market analysis suggests that pent-up demand was a key driver, with expectations that sales will stabilize at a higher level than the previous generation. Kia’s new models, including the PV5, EV5, and EV4, performed strongly, with the PV5 selling 736 units and securing a spot in the top 15. The EV2, which sold only single-digit units in Q1, saw sales jump to 647 units.

Other new entrants included Subaru’s Uncharted and Outback, Cupra’s Raval, Porsche’s Cayenne, Xpeng’s P7+, Lexus’s ES, and Zeekr’s 7GT. The Cupra Raval is currently available only in its 52 kWh battery variant, priced at 368,900 Swedish krona (approximately 33,400 euros) before incentives. A 37 kWh variant is expected to launch in autumn 2026, priced at 320,900 Swedish krona (approximately 29,070 euros).

Policy Effects Begin to Show as BEV Market Expands

Sweden’s 2026 incentive program targeting low-income households and rural areas appears to be taking effect, driving growth in BEV sales. However, some observers argue that the subsidies may primarily benefit legacy automakers’ shareholders and executives rather than directly lowering the cost barrier for consumers. Volkswagen Group’s performance declined in Q2, with sales down year-over-year, potentially due to temporary market allocation adjustments.

Overall, Sweden’s BEV market has returned to a growth trajectory, while PHEV market share remains stable. Traditional internal combustion engine and hybrid vehicles continue to lose ground. Based on current trends, Sweden’s BEV market share could approach 50% by the end of 2026.

Economic data shows Sweden’s GDP growth rates for Q3 2025, Q4 2025, and Q1 2026 were 2.3%, 2.0%, and 2.0%, respectively. Inflation rose from 0.5% at the end of Q1 to 0.7% by the end of Q2. Interest rates have remained steady at 1.75% since late September 2025, and the manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) climbed to 58.3 in June, indicating continued expansion in manufacturing activity.
