New Charger Features and Pricing Advantages
On September 2, Schneider Electric launched the Schneider Charge, a smart Level 2 home electric vehicle (EV) charger in the U.S. and Canada. The charger delivers a maximum output of 11.5 kW (48 amps) and includes built-in dynamic load balancing. The product comes with two current transformer (CT) clamps, which can be installed directly on the main electrical panel, enabling automatic power adjustment without the need for additional hardware. In contrast, Tesla’s Wall Connector requires a $210 Remote Meter to activate the same feature, bringing the total cost to $745. Schneider Charge is priced at $695, offering a $50 cost advantage.
Schneider Electric stated that the charger is specifically designed for homes with limited electrical capacity, allowing users to maximize their existing power setup without upgrading their electrical meters or panels. For example, if a home’s main circuit breaker is rated at 200 amperes and household usage reaches 160 amperes, the charger can automatically allocate the remaining 40 amperes for charging. If household usage drops to 100 amperes, the charger can increase its output to 100 amperes, reducing charging time. This feature effectively prevents tripped breakers, making it particularly suitable for older homes or those with insufficient electrical infrastructure.
Installation Convenience and Product Specifications
The Schneider Charge offers both NACS and J1772 connector options, making it compatible with most EV models on the market, including those from Tesla, Ford, and Rivian. The product includes a 25-foot charging cable and supports both indoor and outdoor installation. It also features a smartphone app for scheduling charging sessions, monitoring power usage, and adjusting output. Currently, only a hardwired version is available, but Schneider Electric has announced plans to release a plug-in version early next year, further enhancing installation flexibility.
However, the installation process for the Schneider Charge may become more complex depending on the distance between the electrical panel and the charger. Since the CT clamps must be hardwired to the charger’s main board, additional wiring may be required if the two are far apart, potentially increasing installation costs. In comparison, Tesla’s Remote Meter uses wireless communication, simplifying the installation process. For users who do not require load balancing, the Tesla Wall Connector remains one of the most highly regarded options on the market.
Market Positioning and Competitive Landscape
Schneider Electric emphasized that the Schneider Charge is designed to provide an efficient charging solution for homes with limited electrical capacity. With an output of 11.5 kW, the charger can add approximately 48 to 56 kilometers of range per hour, meeting the overnight charging needs of most households. Compared to competitors, this charger offers a stronger combination of price and integrated functionality, though there is still room for improvement in installation convenience.
As EV adoption continues to rise, load management features in home chargers are becoming a key consideration for consumers. Schneider Electric’s latest product not only reduces upfront purchase costs for users but also sets a new price benchmark in the market. However, given Tesla’s dominant market share and strong brand loyalty in North America, it remains to be seen whether the Schneider Charge can challenge its position in the short term. Sales performance and user feedback will be critical in determining its success.
