Rivian Launches Major Software Update for First-Gen R1 Owners

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has announced that its 2026.31 software update will introduce Waze real-time traffic alerts to all passenger models, including the first-generation R1S, R1T, and the newly launched R2. This update not only enhances navigation capabilities but also delivers the new Rivian OS 2.0 system, granting early adopters access to features previously exclusive to refreshed models.

Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s Chief Software Officer, stated that the 2026.31 update will cover all R1 models, though the exact rollout schedule has not been disclosed. Rivian OS 2.0, which debuts on the R2, features a redesigned infotainment system and updated graphics, with Rivian claiming it offers faster performance and greater intuitiveness than the previous version. The update aims to unify the software architecture across all models, streamline maintenance, and extend software support for older vehicles.

Waze Integration Enhances Navigation, but User Reporting Functionality Remains Unclear

The Waze integration in Rivian OS 2.0 will provide real-time traffic, accident, and road hazard alerts. However, it remains unclear whether drivers will be able to submit their own reports through the in-vehicle system or only receive alerts. Bensaid emphasized that this update will allow Rivian owners to access comprehensive navigation features without relying on smartphone mirroring.

Notably, Rivian has no plans to add Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to its current or future models. The company believes its in-house developed Rivian OS provides sufficient functionality and integration, eliminating the need for third-party systems. This strategy reflects Rivian’s confidence in its software ecosystem but means owners will not be able to use other navigation or entertainment apps via CarPlay or Android Auto.

Unified Software Architecture Extends Support, R1 Models Excluded from Halo Wheels

The introduction of Rivian OS 2.0 marks a step toward a single core operating system for all models. Bensaid noted that a unified software architecture enables faster resolution of potential issues and ensures early adopters continue to receive updates, thereby extending the lifespan of their vehicles. For first-generation R1 owners, this means longer-term access to new features, preventing software obsolescence from degrading the user experience.

However, R1 models will not receive the R2’s Halo Wheels, a multifunctional touch-sensitive scroll wheel on the steering wheel that controls most infotainment functions. R1 models will retain traditional button-based controls. Rivian clarified that the focus of this update is on improving system performance and user experience rather than hardware changes.

R2 Models Ship with New System as Amazon Expands Rivian Electric Van Fleet

The R2, which began deliveries this year, is the first model to ship with Rivian OS 2.0 and Waze alerts. Reviews highlight the R2’s strong charging performance and long-distance driving capabilities. Combined with Rivian’s recent positive financial results, this suggests growing market acceptance for the R2.

In the commercial vehicle sector, Rivian continues to expand its partnerships. Amazon recently announced the addition of 10,000 Rivian electric vans to its fleet within six months, further bolstering its electric delivery operations. This software update not only strengthens Rivian’s passenger vehicle competitiveness but also underscores the company’s ongoing investment in electric vehicle technology and software development.
