R2 Delivers Impressive Charging Performance in Real-World Test

The Rivian R2, a rising electric vehicle, demonstrated robust charging performance in a recent on-site test. Conducted by Kyle Conner, founder of Out of Spec Studios, the "10% Challenge" test showed that the R2 could add 48.3 kWh in just 15 minutes at an Ionna charging station when starting from a 10% state-of-charge (SOC), achieving an average charging power of 193 kW and rapidly boosting its battery level to 60%. This performance not only surpasses most comparable 400V electric vehicles but also outpaces the Tesla Model Y Performance in low-SOC charging scenarios.

During the test, the R2 initially charged at 220 kW, peaking at 229 kW before gradually tapering off after reaching 32% SOC. Even at 50% SOC, the R2 maintained a charging power of 165 kW, significantly higher than the Tesla Model Y Performance under the same conditions. Conner noted that the R2’s 400V battery architecture compensates for its lower voltage by allowing a charging current of up to 600 amps, enabling rapid charging speeds.

In highway efficiency testing, the R2 achieved 2.2 miles per kWh at a constant speed of 80 mph (approximately 129 km/h), traveling 92.8 miles (about 149 km) as its SOC dropped from 60% to 10%. While this range falls short of the Tesla Model Y Performance, Conner argued that the R2’s charging speed makes it well-suited for long-distance travel, calling it "the fastest-charging 400V vehicle on the market today."

Highway Efficiency Lags Behind Model Y, but Charging Advantage Enhances Practicality

The R2’s energy efficiency during high-speed driving trails that of the Tesla Model Y Performance, which achieves over 3 miles per kWh under the same conditions. Conner attributed this difference to the R2’s boxier design, which is less aerodynamic than the Model Y’s sleeker profile, resulting in higher energy consumption at high speeds. However, he emphasized that at a more moderate speed of 70 mph (approximately 113 km/h), the R2’s range would improve significantly, aligning better with typical driving habits.

The R2’s charging performance stands out as a key advantage. Conner highlighted that the vehicle could reach 60% SOC in just 15 minutes, and extending the charging session to 80% would further reduce the need for frequent stops, enhancing convenience for long-distance trips. He stated that for most drivers who are not in a hurry, the R2’s charging capabilities are more than adequate for both daily use and road trips, describing it as a "reasonable" choice.

Rivian’s decision to equip the R2 with a 400V battery architecture, often seen as less advanced than 800V systems, has proven effective in delivering fast charging speeds by increasing the allowable charging current to 600 amps. However, Conner cautioned that to achieve the R2’s maximum charging performance, drivers would need access to charging stations capable of delivering 600 amps, which are currently limited in availability and could impact the experience for some owners.

Despite its lower highway efficiency compared to the Tesla Model Y, the R2’s charging speed and overall performance have earned praise from experts. Conner concluded that the R2 meets the basic requirements for long-distance travel, making it a compelling option for consumers who prioritize charging convenience.
