Qatar’s First EV Manufacturing Plant Officially Launches
On August 16, UK-based WATT Electric Vehicle Company and Qatar’s JTA International Investment Holding announced a strategic partnership to establish Qatar’s first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant. The collaboration will jointly develop a new generation of EVs specifically designed for the Gulf region. The initiative encompasses vehicle design, engineering, production planning, and the introduction of advanced manufacturing technologies, marking a critical step forward for Qatar’s EV industry.
Dr. Amir Ali Salemi Zadeh, CEO of JTA, stated that the project aims not only to produce electric vehicles but also to build a globally competitive manufacturing platform. This effort seeks to position Qatar as a regional leader in advanced manufacturing, clean mobility, and automotive innovation. The partnership will strengthen regional supply chains, promote research and development, and cultivate local technical talent, laying the foundation for Qatar’s manufacturing transformation.
Patented Technology Enables Customization for the Gulf Market
WATT will contribute its patented lightweight aluminum architecture and proprietary EV platform, a technology already validated in the UK. This approach is designed to shorten development timelines and reduce manufacturing costs. Neil Yates, CEO of WATT, highlighted that the engineering teams have optimized vehicle designs for the Gulf region’s extreme environmental conditions, including advanced thermal management and battery performance in high temperatures, ensuring reliable operation under local challenges.
JTA will provide investment capabilities, international partnership resources, and regional market expertise to support the establishment of a complete EV industry chain in Qatar. Both parties emphasized that the collaboration will cover the entire vehicle development process, from proprietary platform technology to full vehicle engineering, product development, and production planning. The goal is to establish advanced manufacturing capabilities in Qatar to meet the specific needs of Gulf region consumers.
Industrial Upgrading and Talent Development as Key Focus Areas
The partnership is expected to drive the development of Qatar’s EV industry chain, including component suppliers, research institutions, and technical talent training systems. WATT has experience in low-to-medium-volume EV production in the UK, serving both its own brand and third-party clients with commercial and passenger vehicles. This collaboration will bring WATT’s technology and expertise to the Gulf market, helping to elevate the technical standards of local manufacturing.
Both companies stated that the new vehicle models will be optimized for the Gulf region’s environmental challenges, such as high temperatures and sandstorms, to ensure product reliability and competitiveness in the local market. Specific details of the collaboration, including the construction timeline for the manufacturing plant, investment amounts, projected production capacity, and vehicle specifications, have not yet been disclosed. Additionally, there has been no further clarification on whether the Qatari government will provide policy support or subsidies. However, both JTA and WATT emphasized that the project will create high-value employment opportunities in Qatar and promote the transformation and upgrading of the local manufacturing sector.
As the global EV market continues to grow, the Gulf region, a key energy and transportation hub, views this partnership as a significant milestone in Qatar’s entry into the EV industry. The ability to attract more international partners and drive the development of the regional EV industry will be a focal point for observers in the coming years.
