Overhead Charging System Launched to Address Airport Space and Efficiency Challenges
Portland International Airport (PDX) has officially activated the world’s first overhead electric vehicle charging system at its Quick Turnaround Facility (QTA). Installed by ChargePoint, the system includes 10 dual-port fast chargers, each delivering 200 kW of power, enabling simultaneous charging for up to 20 rental electric vehicles. The overhead design conserves ground space while mitigating risks of damage to charging equipment from vehicle collisions, a common issue with traditional ground-mounted stations.
Jeremiah Hartley, the airport’s rental car services manager, stated that the overhead design significantly reduces installation costs by minimizing conduit and wiring requirements. It also protects the charging equipment from potential damage caused by vehicle movement. Given the high vehicle turnover and dense traffic in airport rental facilities, conventional ground-based charging stations occupy valuable space and can disrupt vehicle dispatch operations. The overhead system effectively overcomes these limitations.
The system is specifically engineered to allow rental companies to fast-charge vehicles during brief intervals between cleaning and maintenance, ensuring EVs can quickly return to service. ChargePoint’s fleet management software provides remote monitoring, troubleshooting, and charging schedule management tools, enabling rental operators to adjust charging plans flexibly based on vehicle dispatch needs.
Unique Charging Demands at Airports Make Overhead Design a Viable Solution
Portland International Airport noted that charging requirements in airport rental facilities differ from those of standard public charging stations. These facilities must simultaneously meet demands for high power output, rapid vehicle turnover, and space constraints. If the overhead charging system performs reliably in daily operations, it could serve as a practical model for other airports facing similar space limitations.
Currently, 11 rental car companies operate at PDX, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, Thrifty, and Zipcar. However, ChargePoint has not disclosed which companies will be the first to use the new system. Airport management emphasized that the activation of this system not only enhances rental service efficiency but also lays the groundwork for future expansion of electric vehicle rentals.
While the airport has not released specific installation costs or operational data, Hartley highlighted that the overhead design offers significant long-term advantages in maintenance and space utilization. Each charger can deliver up to 200 kW of power to two vehicles simultaneously, ensuring that vehicles receive sufficient charge during brief stops and further improving the overall efficiency of airport rental services.
As global demand for electric vehicle rentals continues to grow, the development of airport charging infrastructure has become a critical focus. Portland International Airport’s adoption of the overhead charging system demonstrates innovative thinking and provides a valuable reference for other airports undergoing electrification.
