Nevada Opens Commercial Robotaxi Services
The Nevada Transportation Authority approved commercial robotaxi permits for Tesla, Waymo, and Uber on August 21, allowing over 5,000 paid autonomous vehicles to operate in Clark County. This marks the first approval of such a large-scale commercial robotaxi operation in the U.S., signaling the transition of autonomous driving technology from testing to full commercial application.
Under the approved permits, Tesla is authorized to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis, the largest allocation among the three companies. Waymo and Uber are each permitted to deploy 1,000 autonomous vehicles. These permits set the deployment limits for the next 12 months, though the actual number of vehicles each company will introduce remains to be seen.
Deployment Plans and Vehicle Models by Company
At a Nevada Transportation Authority meeting on August 20, Tesla announced it would prioritize deploying driverless Model Y electric crossovers. Eric Early, chief engineer of Tesla’s Cybercab division, emphasized that the 5,000-vehicle cap is not a technological limitation but rather based on market demand and operational planning. Early revealed that Tesla expects to deploy approximately 2,500 vehicles within the next year.
Waymo currently offers paid robotaxi services in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix using Zeekr-made Ojai minivans. Regarding its Nevada deployment, Waymo did not specify whether it would introduce both the Ojai and Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis. The company only stated that Las Vegas is included in its expansion plans but did not disclose a specific timeline.
Uber will deploy its autonomous fleet through partners, including Amazon’s Zoox and Hyundai’s Motional. Zoox already holds a permit for 100 robotaxis in Nevada, featuring its purpose-built, steering wheel-free autonomous pod. Motional uses Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossovers equipped with autonomous technology to provide services for Uber.
Clark County Becomes a Commercial Robotaxi Pilot Zone
Clark County, home to approximately 2.5 million residents and Nevada’s three largest cities, includes Las Vegas, a globally renowned tourism and entertainment hub that attracts tens of millions of visitors annually. While Nevada has previously allowed limited robotaxi testing, the scale of this commercial permit approval is unprecedented, indicating that robotaxis are entering a phase of large-scale commercial operation.
Tesla representatives noted that Las Vegas’s high-density traffic and diverse transportation needs will help validate the reliability and economic viability of autonomous technology. Waymo and Uber emphasized close coordination with local authorities to ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards. However, the Nevada Transportation Authority has not disclosed the criteria used to approve these permits, including details on safety, vehicle specifications, or operational scope.
It remains unclear how local governments or residents will respond to the large-scale introduction of robotaxis or whether it will impact the traditional taxi industry. None of the companies have released detailed deployment timelines, stating only that they will gradually expand operations within the permit’s validity period.
