UK-based renewable energy infrastructure developer NatPower Marine announced on July 17 the strategic acquisition of the Aqua superPower international vessel charging network, marking a significant milestone in its global maritime electrification strategy. Facilitated by ATV Power, a subsidiary of NatPower Marine’s parent company NatPower Group, the acquisition grants NatPower Marine access to Aqua superPower’s electric vessel charging stations across more than 80 ports and marinas in Europe and North America, further strengthening its leadership in maritime charging infrastructure.

Aqua superPower’s Existing Network Covers Popular Waterways in Europe and North America

Aqua superPower currently operates electric vessel charging stations in over 80 ports and marinas across Europe and North America, serving popular waterways such as the French Riviera, Italian Riviera, Lake Geneva in Switzerland, the UK South Coast, San Francisco Bay, Lake Tahoe, and Lake Michigan in the United States. These charging stations primarily serve small electric boats and yachts, with a maximum charging capacity of approximately 150 kilowatts. However, as the global shipping industry shifts toward electrification, commercial vessels such as container ships and ferries may require charging capacities reaching several megawatts, posing greater demands on charging infrastructure.

Acquisition Enhances NatPower Marine’s Global Operational Capabilities

Fabrizio Zago, CEO of NatPower Marine, stated that the acquisition not only provides the group with an immediate international operational presence but also strengthens its ability to deploy large-scale port electrification infrastructure. Zago emphasized that the addition of Aqua superPower will transform NatPower Marine from an infrastructure developer into a platform provider with global operational scale, expanding its electrification model from recreational boats to large commercial ports and maritime hubs. He noted that the transaction represents a decisive step forward in NatPower Marine’s global maritime electrification efforts, with plans to leverage Aqua superPower’s existing port partnerships and technical foundation to gradually upgrade charging equipment to meet the high-power demands of commercial vessels.

Global Shipping Decarbonization Trend Drives Demand for Port Electrification

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target for the global shipping industry to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, prompting governments and port authorities worldwide to introduce relevant policies. For example, the European Union’s “Fit for 55” package requires major ports to provide shore power facilities by 2030, while California mandates that vessels docking from 2030 onward must use shore power or zero-emission alternative fuels. These policies provide clear market demand and regulatory support for the development of port electrification infrastructure.

NatPower Marine’s acquisition reflects the industry’s proactive approach to addressing the charging needs of commercial ports. While Aqua superPower’s current charging stations primarily serve small vessels, NatPower Marine plans to gradually meet the charging requirements of large commercial ships through technological upgrades and expanded partnerships. However, the company has yet to disclose specific details regarding its technology roadmap, list of partner ports, or the timeline for asset transfer. According to a July 17 report by Charged EVs, the acquisition positions NatPower Marine as the world’s first operator to cover both recreational and commercial vessel charging networks, further solidifying its leading position in maritime electrification.

NatPower Marine stated that it will announce more details on port partnerships and technology upgrades in the coming months to align with the global shipping industry’s decarbonization trends and policy requirements. The acquisition not only accelerates NatPower Marine’s global expansion but also injects new momentum into the development of maritime electrification infrastructure.
