Massachusetts Launches V2X Pilot Program Offering Eligible EV Owners Free dcbel Smart Home Energy Station

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center has launched a V2X pilot program providing eligible electric vehicle owners with a free dcbel Ara Home Energy Station, integrating solar power and bidirectional charging to enable home backup power and energy independence. Pilot Program Opens for Applications to Explore EV Grid Potential

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has partnered with dcbel, TMH, Resource Innovation, and B2Q to launch the V2X Pilot Program, aimed at exploring the practical potential of electric vehicles as grid resources. The program will provide eligible Massachusetts residents with a free dcbel Ara Home Energy Station, including installation, to collect real-world data on system performance, environmental and financial impact, and user behavior.

Applications will remain open through September 30, 2026, or until program funds are exhausted. Participants must own or lease an eligible electric vehicle, including the 2018-2025 Nissan Leaf, 2025 Polestar 3, or 2025 Volvo EX90. Additionally, applicants must not have existing solar or battery storage systems installed to ensure the accuracy of pilot data.

Smart Energy Station Enables Home Energy Independence

The dcbel Ara Home Energy Station integrates solar power generation with bidirectional charging technology, allowing smart charging during off-peak hours and automatic switching to home backup power during grid outages. The system can utilize the vehicle’s battery to supply power to the home, enhancing energy independence. Duc Duy Tran, Sales Lead at dcbel, stated, 'The true value of V2X technology lies in its residential applications. Ara transforms a bidirectional EV into the core of a home’s energy management, enabling families to manage power more effectively, prepare for outages, and increase energy independence.'

The system not only reduces household electricity costs but also provides stable power during emergencies, reducing reliance on the traditional grid. Participants will receive a complete Ara Home Energy Station, including installation, at no cost.

Collecting Real-World Data to Inform Future Policy

MassCEC will use this pilot to gather real-world data on V2X technology across system performance, environmental benefits, and economic impact, while analyzing user behavior patterns. This data will serve as a critical reference for future V2X policy development, helping to create more effective energy management solutions. The program has not disclosed total funding or a participant cap, and applications may close early if demand exceeds available resources.

This pilot program not only delivers tangible benefits to participants but also lays the groundwork for the future of V2X technology. dcbel emphasizes that through the Ara Home Energy Station, households can manage energy use more flexibly, achieving greater energy independence and resilience. It remains unclear whether participants will incur additional costs or obligations after the pilot concludes.
