Range Rover GT Unveils Minimalist Interior, Challenging Conventional Luxury EVs

New All-Electric Platform and Minimalist Interior Design

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has recently unveiled the interior details of the all-new all-electric Range Rover GT, which will become the fifth member of the Range Rover lineup and the first model built on the brand’s new "Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA)" all-electric platform. The EMA platform is designed exclusively for battery-electric vehicles, with no support for internal combustion engines or plug-in hybrids, marking a significant step in JLR’s electrification strategy.

The Range Rover GT’s interior design breaks away from the current trend of large screens in luxury electric vehicles, opting instead for a minimalist style. The center console features almost no physical buttons, with all functions integrated into a central touchscreen display. A compact digital gauge cluster is positioned in front of the driver. JLR’s design team stated that this design draws inspiration from modern luxury homes, emphasizing spaciousness and simplicity while avoiding the visual clutter caused by excessive screen reliance.

The cabin materials use JLR’s proprietary "ultrafabrics" synthetic material, claimed to be 50% lighter than traditional leather and more environmentally friendly. JLR revealed that the material has undergone simulated wear tests equivalent to 10 years of use and still maintains a like-new condition. Additionally, the interior will be available in "Dual Tone" and "Shadow Black" themes, with multiple customization options to cater to diverse consumer preferences.

The Range Rover GT will be equipped with a panoramic sunroof, described by JLR as the largest in the brand’s lineup, further enhancing the sense of openness inside the cabin. The vehicle will also feature modern amenities such as wireless charging pads and USB Type-C ports to improve practicality.

Rear-Seat Space Comparable to Top-Tier Sedans

The Range Rover GT will be offered in four- and five-seat configurations. The four-seat version includes a center console with dual wireless charging pads, cup holders, and a touchscreen. JLR emphasizes that the rear-seat legroom in the GT will set a new benchmark in its class, rivaling that of the Bentley Flying Spur, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and BMW 7 Series.

Firsthand experience indicates that the rear seats are exceptionally comfortable, with headrests as soft as pillows, allowing even passengers around 170 cm tall to stretch their legs effortlessly. The front seats are positioned between those of a sedan and an SUV, offering an unobstructed view. The paddle shifters and turn signal stalks on the steering wheel provide a refined tactile feel and smooth operation.

JLR states that the GT’s luxury appeal will align more closely with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series rather than the more ostentatious styles of Rolls-Royce or Bentley. Currently, multiple Range Rover GT prototypes are undergoing final road testing at JLR’s engineering campus in Gaydon, England, with an expected launch in 2026.

Electrification Strategy and Market Positioning

JLR’s electrification efforts have been relatively cautious. While its first all-electric model, the Jaguar I-Pace, debuted in 2018, its market performance fell short of expectations. The development of the Range Rover Electric has taken nearly five years, significantly longer than the roughly two-year development cycles of comparable models from Chinese automakers. JLR explains that the delay was intentional to internalize development and production processes, ensuring quality and software performance while laying the groundwork for future models.

The launch of the Range Rover GT will mark a pivotal step in JLR’s electrification transformation. As the brand’s first model based on the EMA platform, it will join three other upcoming all-electric models—the Range Rover Electric, Range Rover Sport Electric, and Jaguar Type 01—to form JLR’s future electric vehicle lineup. These models are expected to challenge competitors such as the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV and Cadillac Escalade IQ.

JLR has not yet disclosed details regarding the Range Rover GT’s battery capacity, powertrain specifications, or market launch timeline but is expected to make an official announcement later this year. The introduction of this model will further solidify JLR’s competitiveness in the luxury electric vehicle market and demonstrate its commitment to electrification.
