Automaker Consortium’s Charging Network Claims Top Spot in Debut Ranking

IONNA, a joint venture backed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, achieved a score of 807 out of 1,000 in JD Power’s 2026 US Electric Vehicle Experience Public Charging Study, earning the highest satisfaction rating among fast-charging networks. This marks IONNA’s first year of eligibility for the study, where it surpassed the Mercedes-Benz Charging Network (797) and Rivian Adventure Network (755) to become the most trusted charging provider among US electric vehicle drivers.

JD Power’s study noted that IONNA excelled in key metrics such as charging convenience, speed, and availability, with several scores exceeding the industry average by over 100 points. As of mid-August 2026, IONNA has deployed 150 charging stations across the US, totaling 1,375 charging ports, and continues to expand its network. CEO Seth Cutler stated that IONNA utilizes Alpitronic hardware paired with in-house-developed software, measuring charger reliability by the first-attempt success rate. He emphasized the company’s commitment to redefining public charging quality and service standards.

Charging Stations with Integrated Amenities Become a Key Advantage

IONNA’s “Rechargery” sites combine high-power DC fast chargers with amenities such as canopies, restrooms, food services, lounges, and multiple charging stalls, addressing diverse driver needs during charging sessions. JD Power’s survey revealed that such integrated charging stations received high praise from users, with fast chargers located at hotels achieving the highest satisfaction score of 692. Gas stations and convenience stores (689) and restaurants (688) followed closely, while dealership chargers scored only 570, and independent parking lots and garages received 606. The findings underscore the importance of charging station environments in enhancing driver experience.

The study further indicated that overall satisfaction with public DC fast charging in the US rose by 12 points year over year to 666 in 2026, marking the highest score since the study began in 2021. Charger availability improved by 27 points, driver safety perceptions at charging stations increased by 18 points, and satisfaction with charging costs also rose by 18 points. The failure rate for charging attempts dropped to 12%, down from 14% in the previous year, reflecting improvements in charging equipment, payment systems, and site design.

Level 2 Charging Satisfaction Declines Despite Fast-Charging Gains

While satisfaction with DC fast charging continued to improve, Level 2 charging experienced a decline. JD Power’s 2026 study showed that satisfaction with Level 2 chargers fell by 12 points year over year to 595, primarily due to cumbersome payment processes and technical issues when initiating charging sessions. The survey also noted that slow charging speeds remained a shared challenge for both Level 2 and DC fast chargers, though dissatisfaction with DC fast-charging speeds showed signs of improvement.

The 2026 JD Power study surveyed 6,594 battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle owners between January and June 2026. The results highlight how automaker-backed charging networks, through enhanced site design, reliable equipment, and comprehensive amenities, are progressively improving the convenience and comfort of electric vehicle charging. IONNA’s success demonstrates that charging station location, facility quality, and service standards have become critical factors influencing driver preferences.
