EV Sales Hit New Highs as Market Penetration Exceeds 12%
India's electric vehicle market continues its rapid expansion. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) released the latest data showing that India's electric vehicle (EV) sales, including cars, scooters, and three-wheelers, totaled 327,901 units in July 2026, a 66% year-on-year increase and a new monthly record. This marks the second consecutive month of record-breaking sales, following June's total of 306,220 units, which grew by 63% year-on-year.
FADA noted that the overall market penetration of EVs surpassed 12% for the first time in June, highlighting the growing significance of electric vehicles in India's automotive market. Sai Giridhar, Vice President of FADA, stated that approximately one in eight vehicles sold in the market is now electric. EVs are no longer an alternative consideration for consumers but a mainstream choice.
Electric Scooters Lead Growth with Nearly 90% Annual Increase
Among all EV categories, electric scooters exhibited the fastest growth. According to FADA data, electric scooter sales reached 204,362 units in July, an 88.32% increase from the 108,516 units sold in the same period last year, driving the overall market growth. Electric three-wheelers also performed strongly, with July sales of 87,055 units, a 25.3% year-on-year increase.
The commercial EV sector experienced explosive growth as well. According to Business Standard data, electric commercial vehicle sales in July reached 3,556 units, a 168.6% surge from the 1,324 units sold in July 2025. Giridhar noted that commercial EV sales have nearly tripled, indicating that commercial fleets have moved from pilot phases to large-scale procurement, reflecting a significant rise in corporate acceptance of electric vehicles.
Consumers Favor EV Design and Lower Costs
In New Delhi, several consumers cited the design and cost advantages of electric vehicles as key factors in their purchasing decisions. Rohit Raj, who is considering a new vehicle, shared that after test-driving multiple models, he found the design and interior of electric vehicles more aligned with modern aesthetics and easier to operate, making them his preferred choice.
Raj Kumar, who operates a car rental business, shared his firsthand experience. He mentioned that his household already owns an electric vehicle, which he believes has lower maintenance costs compared to traditional fuel-powered cars. His company currently has an electric SUV on long-term lease, and clients have praised its quiet performance and comfort. As a result, he plans to gradually replace his fleet of six rental cars with electric vehicles to enhance service quality and reduce operational costs.
FADA's report indicates that the rapid growth of electric vehicles in India reflects increasing consumer acceptance of eco-friendly transportation and the gradual improvement of EV technology and infrastructure. While the regional representativeness of some data remains to be clarified, the back-to-back record-breaking sales figures underscore that India's EV market is entering a phase of high-speed development.
