Idaho Launches Major U.S. Solar Initiatives: 125 MW Solar Farm Online, 400 MW Storage Project Breaks Ground

Idaho has recently brought online the 125 MW Pleasant Valley Solar 2 solar farm while breaking ground on the larger 400 MW Blacks Creek solar-plus-storage project in Ada County. The two projects, with a combined investment exceeding $750 million, are expected to create hundreds of jobs and generate long-term revenue for the state through a 3.5% solar energy tax.

Two Major Solar Projects Launched in Succession

Idaho’s energy development has reached a significant milestone. rPlus Energies, headquartered in White River Junction, Vermont, announced that the 125 MW Pleasant Valley Solar 2 solar farm in Idaho was officially connected to the grid on July 21. Meanwhile, construction has begun on the larger 400 MW Blacks Creek Energy Center in southwest Ada County, which is expected to become one of the state’s largest solar-plus-storage projects.

Luigi Resta, CEO of rPlus Energies, stated that these two projects not only represent the company’s long-term commitment to Idaho’s energy transition but will also inject strong momentum into the local economy. The combined investment for Pleasant Valley Solar 2 and Blacks Creek Energy Center exceeds $750 million, directly creating hundreds of jobs during construction and operation phases while stimulating local business activity through the supply chain.

Energy Transition and Economic Benefits

According to the latest statistics from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), as of June 2026, Idaho’s installed solar capacity reached 1,301 MW, ranking 34th among the 50 U.S. states, with solar power accounting for 9.01% of the state’s total electricity generation. SEIA data shows that over the past few years, Idaho’s solar industry has attracted more than $2 billion in investment, becoming a key driver of local economic growth.

Lisa Grow, CEO of Idaho Power, noted that the launch of Pleasant Valley Solar 2 and Blacks Creek Energy Center will effectively enhance the reliability and flexibility of the state’s power system. She emphasized that these projects will provide customers with more stable and affordable energy options while meeting the growing electricity demand of communities. Grow stated that the partnership with rPlus Energies is a critical step in modernizing Idaho’s energy infrastructure.

rPlus Energies revealed that upon completion of both projects, the company’s total solar and storage capacity in Idaho will exceed 1 GW, covering projects that are operational, under construction, or under contract. These initiatives will not only increase the state’s share of renewable energy but also generate sustained revenue for state and local governments through Idaho’s 3.5% solar energy tax on gross earnings.

Workforce Development and Local Prosperity

To support Idaho’s long-term energy development, rPlus Energies and its partners have donated $375,000 to establish scholarships aimed at cultivating local technical talent. These funds will be awarded to students at Boise State University and the College of Western Idaho, helping them acquire specialized skills in solar and energy storage to prepare for future job markets.

The activation of Pleasant Valley Solar 2 and the groundbreaking of Blacks Creek Energy Center mark Idaho’s solar industry entering a phase of rapid development. Although the state has traditionally relied on hydropower, solar capacity has grown significantly in recent years, indicating that diversifying renewable energy sources has become a key direction in Idaho’s energy policy. With more large-scale solar projects coming online, the state is poised to play a more active role in the national energy transition.

Industry observers note that the rise of Idaho’s solar industry reflects both technological advancements and cost reductions, as well as the joint efforts of local governments and businesses in promoting a green economy.
