General Motors to Equip All 2027 Model-Year EVs with Tesla-Compatible Charging Ports

General Motors confirms that all 2027 model-year electric vehicles from Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC will feature native North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports, enabling direct access to Tesla Superchargers and other NACS-compatible charging networks. GM Energy Pass integrates major charging networks, including IONNA, Electrify America, and ChargePoint, covering nearly 70% of U.S. DC fast chargers, and supports Plug & Charge authentication. Some Tesla charging stations and older Tesla vehicles remain subject to compatibility limitations.

All 2027 Model-Year EVs to Feature Native NACS Ports

General Motors (GM) has officially announced that starting with the 2027 model year, all electric vehicles from its Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC brands will come equipped with native North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports, also known as SAE J3400. This transition will allow GM EV owners to plug directly into Tesla Superchargers and other NACS-compatible charging stations without the need for adapters. GM emphasizes that this move will significantly streamline the charging process and enhance the accessibility of charging networks.

GM states that every 2027 model-year EV will include a NACS port, covering all announced models. The 2026 Cadillac Optiq has already adopted the NACS port, while the reborn Chevrolet Bolt, set to launch in late 2026 as a 2027 model, will also feature the same standard. Other 2026 model-year EVs, such as the Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV, Lyriq, Vistiq, Escalade IQ, IQL, Sierra EV, and Hummer EV, will still require GM’s official NACS adapters to connect to Tesla Superchargers.

The NACS standard, formally designated as SAE J3400 by SAE International in 2023, aims to unify North America’s electric vehicle charging interfaces. Compatible with Tesla Superchargers, the standard supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, substantially reducing charging times. GM’s full adoption of NACS ports marks a critical step toward standardizing North America’s EV charging ecosystem.

Adapter Options and Charging Station Compatibility

Although 2027 model-year GM EVs will feature native NACS ports, owners may still need various adapters to accommodate different charging standards. GM currently offers three official adapters: a NACS DC fast-charging adapter for $275, a CCS1 DC fast-charging adapter for $189, and a J1772 AC charging adapter for $67. The CCS1 and J1772 adapters can also be purchased together for $256. These adapters ensure that owners can continue using existing CCS1 and J1772 charging infrastructure until NACS becomes more widespread.

GM notes that over 27,500 Tesla Superchargers in North America already support the NACS standard, but some Tesla charging stations remain restricted to Tesla vehicles due to hardware limitations. These stations have not been upgraded to the NACS/SAE J3400 standard and only support Tesla’s proprietary protocol. Additionally, Tesla vehicles manufactured in 2021 or earlier cannot use NACS charging stations without a hardware upgrade. This limitation affects some older Tesla owners, who must visit a Tesla service center to enable compatibility.

GM’s official NACS DC fast-charging adapter is certified for use with over 27,500 Tesla Superchargers and other NACS-compatible charging stations. The adapter allows owners of 2026 and earlier GM EVs to experience the convenience of NACS charging networks ahead of the 2027 transition. However, due to hardware limitations at some charging stations, owners should verify compatibility before use.

Energy Pass Integrates Charging Networks and Plug & Charge Functionality

To further simplify the charging process, GM has introduced Energy Pass, a service integrated into the MyChevrolet, MyCadillac, and MyGMC owner apps. The service supports multiple charging networks, including Tesla Supercharger, IONNA, Electrify America, and ChargePoint, covering nearly 70% of DC fast chargers in the United States. The EVgo network will also be added to the supported list soon, expanding charging network coverage even further.

Energy Pass already supports Plug & Charge functionality, allowing vehicles to authenticate automatically upon plugging in, with payment processed in the background without additional steps. This feature is currently available at IONNA charging stations and will gradually expand to Tesla Superchargers and other networks. GM states that the rollout of Plug & Charge will significantly improve charging efficiency and reduce the operational burden on owners.

The launch of GM Energy Pass represents a new phase in charging network integration. Owners can manage registration and payments across multiple charging networks through a single app, eliminating the need to download separate applications for each provider. This convenience will further accelerate EV adoption and enhance the overall user experience. However, GM advises owners that Plug & Charge functionality is still being expanded at some charging stations, and they should confirm support before use.

While the adoption of the NACS standard will greatly improve charging convenience, limitations remain in the charging ecosystem. Some Tesla charging stations cannot accommodate non-Tesla vehicles due to hardware restrictions, and older Tesla owners must undergo hardware upgrades to use NACS stations. Additionally, owners may still need multiple adapters to access different charging standards. As the NACS standard continues to expand, full compatibility across charging networks is expected to improve, delivering a more seamless charging experience for EV owners.
