EV Market Share Hits Record High as Battery Electric Vehicle Sales Surge
In the second quarter of 2026, France’s electric vehicle market share, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), reached 34.5%, a significant increase from 23.9% in the same period last year. BEVs accounted for 28.3% of the market, up from 17.1%, with sales totaling 120,479 units, marking a 75% year-over-year increase. PHEVs saw a slight decline in market share to 6.2%, with sales of 28,281 units, a 4% decrease from Q2 2025. The overall auto market recorded 457,688 units sold, a 6% increase compared to the previous year.
The French government’s "Coup de Pouce" incentive program, introduced this year, played a pivotal role in boosting BEV sales. The program offers subsidies ranging from €3,500 to €5,700 based on household income. For instance, the Renault Twingo became approximately €2,000 cheaper than the Dacia Spring after incentives, leading to a notable rise in its sales. Additionally, persistently high fuel prices have encouraged more consumers to switch to electric vehicles.
Tesla and Renault Dominate Market with Four Renault Models in Top Six
In the BEV segment, the Tesla Model Y retained its top position with 11,695 units sold, followed closely by the Renault 5 with 10,579 units. The Renault Scenic ranked third with 6,233 units sold. Renault Group demonstrated strong performance in France’s BEV market, with four of its models securing spots in the top six. The Renault Twingo, which debuted in March 2026, has rapidly gained traction, climbing to sixth place in sales rankings.
The market for traditional internal combustion engine vehicles continued to shrink, with petrol and diesel-only vehicles combining for just 17.9% market share, a sharp decline from the previous year. Analysts noted that the slight uptick in petrol vehicle sales in Q2 2026 was primarily due to automakers clearing out old inventory, with expectations that the decline will resume in future quarters. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEVs) have become the dominant powertrains, steadily increasing their market share.
EV Growth Persists Despite Economic Slowdown; Challenges Remain for Second Half of 2026
Despite a slowdown in France’s economic growth—with GDP rising just 0.9% in Q1 2026 and an estimated 0.6% in Q2—the electric vehicle market continued to expand. Inflation has remained around 2% in recent months, while interest rates were raised to 2.5% in early June. The manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) has fluctuated around the 50-point mark. Analysts believe that the dual effects of government incentives and high fuel prices will sustain BEV market growth, though economic uncertainty may impact consumer confidence.
France’s EV market remains highly competitive, with new models continuously entering the market. However, sales data for some of these models have not been fully disclosed, leaving their performance uncertain. Industry observers anticipate that EV market share will continue to rise in the second half of 2026, driven by incentive policies and fuel price volatility. Nevertheless, the broader economic climate will be a critical factor. The market strategies of automakers like Renault and Tesla, along with potential adjustments to government policies, will shape the future trajectory of the electric vehicle market.
