Fortescue Deploys World’s Largest Electric Mining Fleet, 150-Tonne Battery-Powered Water Truck Completes Testing in China

Fortescue has completed prototype testing of a 150-tonne battery-powered water truck and other heavy-duty electric mining equipment in China. The first batch of machines is expected to arrive in Australia’s Pilbara region later this year, with the company aiming to phase out all diesel-powered equipment by 2030, cutting annual diesel consumption by hundreds of millions of litres.

Prototype Testing of Heavy-Duty Electric Equipment Completed, Deployment in Pilbara to Begin This Year

Australian mining group Fortescue confirmed at the end of July 2026 that it has completed prototype testing in China for a range of heavy-duty electric mining equipment, including a 150-tonne battery-powered water truck, electric wheel loader, electric dozer, and electric grader. CEO Dino Otranto recently test-operated these machines and confirmed their performance. The first batch of electric equipment is expected to arrive in the Pilbara region of Western Australia later this year, marking the official start of its electrification rollout.

Fortescue plans to phase out all diesel-powered equipment by 2030, aiming to become the world’s first major mining company to achieve zero carbon emissions at its mine sites. The company has already deployed 16 electric excavators in the Pilbara, each reducing diesel consumption by approximately one million litres annually. By the end of 2026, Fortescue expects to electrify half of its 70-strong excavator fleet.

Electric Grader Equipped with 528.6 kWh Battery System, Capable of 8 Hours of Continuous Operation

Chinese engineering machinery manufacturer XCMG revealed that the electric grader tested this time is equipped with a 528.6 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery system, supporting dual-gun fast charging and up to eight hours of continuous operation on a single charge. XCMG stated that the successful testing of these machines marks a new phase in electric mining technology, driving the industry toward cleaner and smarter operations.

Fortescue plans to introduce over 300 240-tonne electric haul trucks in the coming years, supplied by XCMG and Liebherr. To support this large-scale electric fleet, Fortescue is developing 6 MW charging stations internally, with completion expected by the end of the decade to ensure rapid charging. While the exact number of machines in the first batch and their arrival timeline have not been disclosed, the company has confirmed that deployment will begin this year.

Green Energy Infrastructure Advances in Parallel, Targeting Over 1 GW of Renewable Capacity by 2028

Fortescue is simultaneously accelerating its green energy infrastructure, planning to build over 1 GW of solar and wind power facilities by 2028 to provide a stable supply of renewable electricity for its mining operations. Otranto emphasized that this initiative is one of the most ambitious decarbonization efforts in the Australian and global mining sectors, demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainability.

Fortescue has already deployed 16 electric excavators in the Pilbara, reducing diesel consumption by approximately 16 million litres annually. As the electric fleet expands, the company expects further reductions in carbon emissions and improvements in operational efficiency. Fortescue stated that its electrification transition will not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also deliver long-term economic benefits to the mining industry.
