EVs Outperform Gas Cars Across Key Metrics

JD Power’s latest 2026 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) study shows that electric vehicle (EV) owners report higher satisfaction with their new vehicles than gas car owners across nearly all critical metrics. The study surveyed 78,514 owners of 2026 model-year vehicles within the first 90 days of ownership and found that EVs outperformed internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in almost all 37 evaluation categories. Overall satisfaction scores for EVs rose by 22 points compared to the previous year, the largest increase among all powertrain types.

The study highlights that EVs lead gas cars by 109 points in powertrain satisfaction, reflecting their superior performance in acceleration smoothness, quiet operation, and instant torque. Survey respondents widely agreed that EVs deliver a more responsive and refined driving experience, including brisk acceleration, seamless gear-free transitions, and lower noise levels, which significantly outperform traditional ICE vehicles. Advances in charging convenience, extended range, and heat pump technology were also cited as key factors driving higher satisfaction among EV owners.

EV Technology Advancements Win Consumer Trust

Despite the EV market expanding from early adopters to mainstream consumers, the study found that even first-time EV buyers reported higher satisfaction than gas car owners. JD Power noted that the core driving experience of EVs has improved enough to offset some infrastructure limitations. The adoption of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and ongoing vehicle technology improvements have enhanced the convenience of EV ownership, further strengthening consumer confidence.

In terms of emotional attachment, EV owners demonstrated significantly higher satisfaction within the first 90 days of ownership compared to gas car owners. The findings align with another survey by CDK, which revealed that 90% of EV owners plan to purchase another EV for their next vehicle, while 73% stated their household will always own at least one EV. These figures reflect a strong sense of loyalty and long-term commitment to EV ownership among consumers.

Study Sample Represents Broad Cross-Section of Owners

JD Power emphasized that the survey included a diverse and representative sample of 2026 model-year vehicle owners across the United States. The 37 evaluation metrics covered a wide range of factors, including cabin comfort, acceleration response, exterior design, and technology features, providing a comprehensive view of owner satisfaction. While the study did not disclose detailed geographic distribution or specific vehicle models, the results offer valuable insights into the evolving EV market.

Some owners who initially leased an EV later decided to purchase one, underscoring the appeal of EVs in real-world use. Overall, JD Power’s findings demonstrate that EVs have made significant strides in technology and user experience, surpassing gas cars in core areas like powertrain performance while also fostering stronger emotional connections with owners. As charging infrastructure continues to improve and vehicle technology advances, EV market acceptance is expected to grow further.
