EV Charger Cloud Security Assessment Tool Launched with 24 Checkpoints to Help Operators Plug Vulnerabilities

Versinetic has released a free EV Charger Cloud Security Assessment Tool designed for charge point operators, local authorities, and manufacturers across Europe and the UK. The tool covers 24 security checkpoints to evaluate risks in cloud-connected charging infrastructure and supports compliance with emerging standards such as TLS 1.3 and ISO 15118-20.

Cloud Charging Platform Security Challenges Emerge

As electric vehicle charging networks continue to expand across the UK and Europe, the cybersecurity risks associated with cloud platforms have become a growing concern for charge point operators, local authorities, and manufacturers. On July 21, Versinetic launched the EV Charger Cloud Security Assessment Tool, a free self-assessment resource designed to help organizations identify vulnerabilities in cloud-connected charging infrastructure. The tool covers 24 checkpoints across four critical areas: data segregation, remote access controls, certificate management, and incident response.

Versinetic stated that as charging networks scale, operators must ensure the security of not only charging hardware but also the cloud platforms supporting charging services, customer data environments, and operational systems. The company highlighted common security issues in current charging infrastructure, including inadequate separation of customer and operational data, poorly controlled remote access pathways, gaps in certificate management, and insufficient incident response mechanisms. If left unaddressed, these vulnerabilities could compromise service stability and user data security.

Procurement Decisions Lack Cloud Security Assessment Frameworks

Dunstan Power, Managing Director at Versinetic, noted that while procurement teams excel at comparing charging speeds, hardware specifications, and commercial models, they often lack effective methods to assess the security of cloud platforms managing customer data, operational systems, and remote access. He emphasized that issues such as data segregation, access controls, certificate management, and incident response are increasingly critical but frequently overlooked in procurement decisions. The newly launched assessment tool aims to help organizations systematically address these key questions during procurement processes to prevent security risks from being neglected.

The tool is suitable for charge point operators, manufacturers, and local authorities to use in supplier evaluations, procurement exercises, and internal security audits. Versinetic stressed that as the number of charging points grows across Europe and the UK, the security of cloud platforms will directly impact service quality and user trust. Consequently, security assessments have become an indispensable part of charging infrastructure development.

Addressing Emerging Security Standards to Enhance Protection

The EV Charger Cloud Security Assessment Tool is also designed to help organizations prepare for future security standards. Versinetic noted that the tool enables users to evaluate their readiness for TLS 1.3 encryption protocols and the ISO 15118-20 ecosystem. ISO 15118-20 will strengthen certificate management and communication authentication mechanisms, further enhancing the security of charging networks. As these standards are implemented, operators will need to adjust their security strategies proactively to meet regulatory requirements and mitigate potential risks.

While Versinetic has not yet disclosed which organizations have adopted the tool for testing, the company stated that the assessment tool aligns with industry needs for emerging security standards and is expected to serve as a key reference for operators looking to bolster their security measures. As charging infrastructure becomes increasingly complex, cloud platform security management will present a shared challenge for operators and manufacturers. The introduction of such assessment tools reflects the industry’s growing emphasis on cybersecurity, which may soon become a standard component of charging network development.
