$50 Million Loan to Accelerate Southeast Asia’s Clean Energy Development

Ukko Renewable, headquartered in Southeast Asia, has announced the completion of a senior secured debt financing agreement of up to $50 million with the Emerging Africa and Asia Infrastructure Fund (EAAIF). The funds will be used to advance renewable energy projects in Vietnam, the Philippines, and other Southeast Asian nations, with an initial pipeline exceeding 2 gigawatts in installed capacity, encompassing onshore wind, solar, and hydroelectric technologies.

Christophe Guyard, CEO of Ukko Renewable, stated that this long-term and flexible credit facility will accelerate project development and help ensure compliance with international standards, laying the groundwork for attracting commercial investment. He emphasized that the capital will focus on early-stage project development, including site assessments, grid studies, and preliminary engineering design, addressing the early-stage funding bottleneck in Southeast Asia’s renewable energy sector.

Vietnam and Philippines Projects Aligned with National Energy Plans

Ukko Renewable’s 1.4-gigawatt project pipeline in Vietnam has been prioritized under the country’s updated Power Development Plan Eight, reflecting the government’s commitment to renewable energy development. In the Philippines, the company is expanding its wind and hydro assets through the national Green Energy Auction Program. Louis-Victor Duval, CEO of Groupe Duval, described the financing as a defining milestone for Ukko Renewable in Asia’s energy transition, noting that the company combines technical excellence, strong local partnerships, and the highest environmental and social standards to develop high-quality renewable energy projects.

Once fully operational, Ukko Renewable’s pipeline of over 2 gigawatts is projected to offset approximately 2.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to supplying power to more than 2.8 million households. Philippe Valahu, CEO of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), the parent organization of EAAIF, highlighted that mobilizing investment for Asia’s green transition requires robust collaboration between public-backed finance and leading global sponsors. He noted that addressing the funding gap in early-stage project development is a strategic priority for PIDG through 2030, aiming to accelerate a just transition to net-zero emissions in South and Southeast Asia.

Project Impact and Future Outlook

Martijn Proos, Co-Head of Emerging Markets Alternatives Credit at Ninety One, stated that the transaction underscores the fund’s commitment to climate finance and demonstrates the critical role of targeted lending in transition markets. He added that the financing will pave the way for subsequent commercial and institutional investors, further accelerating the clean energy transition in Vietnam and the Philippines.

Southeast Asia’s renewable energy sector has long faced challenges due to insufficient early-stage funding, as private capital tends to have a lower risk tolerance for initial project phases, leading to slow progress. The $50 million loan secured by Ukko Renewable will be used to advance projects to a “ready-to-build” state while ensuring compliance with international environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. Finergreen served as the exclusive financial advisor to Ukko Renewable in this transaction.

While specific construction timelines have not been disclosed, Ukko Renewable has made clear that the financing will expedite its expansion across Southeast Asia. As Vietnam and the Philippines continue to advance green energy policies, such public-private partnerships are expected to play a pivotal role in driving the region’s energy transition. Ukko Renewable aims to expand its renewable energy project pipeline to 3 gigawatts in the coming years, further solidifying its leadership position in Asia’s clean energy market.
