Breakthrough in DC Microgrid Technology Presents Opportunities for Electric Fleet Transition

New research by the UK’s independent research organization Cenex demonstrates that DC-coupled smart energy hubs can effectively reduce operational costs for electric vehicle fleets and overcome grid capacity limitations, offering a viable solution for the electrification of corporate and public-sector fleets. The study evaluated the performance of 3ti’s Papilio3 V2X DC FastHub using the EIGER energy modelling tool, assessing its benefits across diverse settings including fleet depots, factories, offices, and leisure venues.

The findings indicate that DC-coupled energy systems can reduce peak site demand by between 5 kW and 150 kW, with specific outcomes varying by site type and operational profile. Under dual-rate tariffs, office, leisure, and depot sites could achieve annual energy cost savings of £2,600 to £3,700, while high-demand factory sites could save up to £18,000 per year. Cenex emphasized that DC-coupled architecture minimizes energy conversion losses, enhancing overall system efficiency and renewable energy utilization.

Integration of Bidirectional Charging and Energy Storage Enables Optimal Energy Management

Steve Carroll, Head of Research and Technical Services at Cenex, stated that smart DC microgrids, which combine solar power generation, battery storage, and bidirectional EV charging, can significantly reduce energy costs and peak demand, providing critical support for fleet electrification. He noted that in today’s grid-constrained environments, such solutions will be essential for advancing the electrification of transport operations and optimizing energy use.

Mark Potter, Chief Technology Officer at 3ti, further explained that Cenex’s research provides a compelling value case for bidirectional charging hubs in fleet depots, factories, and sites with limited grid capacity. 3ti’s HALO V2X Hub integrates solar generation, battery storage, and bidirectional EV charging into a behind-the-meter DC microgrid. Cenex’s modelling confirms the tangible energy savings and grid benefits delivered by the HALO V2X Hub.

The research highlights that DC-coupled energy hubs offer the dual advantage of cost reduction and grid stability, making them particularly suitable for sites with constrained grid capacity or high energy demand. This technology not only accelerates the transition to electric fleets but also provides businesses and public-sector organizations with more flexible energy management solutions. As electric vehicle adoption continues to rise, the application of smart energy hubs is expected to play a pivotal role in future energy transitions.
