BYD Denza Z Debuts at Goodwood: 1,582 HP Electric Supercar Undercuts Porsche 911 Turbo S on Price and Performance

BYD unveiled the Denza Z electric supercar at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, offering 1,582 horsepower, 1.96-second 0-62 mph acceleration, and a starting price of £142,900—significantly undercutting the Porsche 911 Turbo S while delivering superior performance.

BYD has launched its most ambitious electric vehicle to date, the Denza Z, at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. The new supercar not only challenges established luxury performance brands but does so with a price tag that significantly undercuts its European rivals. The Denza Z Coupe starts at £142,900 ($192,000) in the UK, nearly £56,000 less than the Porsche 911 Turbo S, while delivering more power and faster acceleration.

Record-Breaking Performance

The Denza Z is powered by three electric motors—one on the front axle and two on the rear—generating a combined 1,582 horsepower (1,604 PS). This output enables the top-tier Racing variant to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 1.96 seconds, making it one of the quickest production cars in the world. The Coupe and Spider variants achieve 0-62 mph in 2.25 and 2.3 seconds, respectively, with all models capable of a top speed of 217 mph.

The Denza Z is built on BYD’s new e3 platform, which introduces several industry-first technologies. Among these is China’s first fully in-house-developed steer-by-wire system, which eliminates the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels, enhancing precision and responsiveness. The platform also features BYD’s Disus-M magnetorheological intelligent suspension system, which can adjust damping in real-time to absorb road imperfections or enable a dynamic “dancing” mode for performance driving.

Advanced Battery and Charging Technology

All Denza Z variants are equipped with a 76 kWh BYD Blade Battery 2.0, offering WLTP-estimated ranges of 410 km for the Coupe, 400 km for the Spider, and 380 km for the Racing variant. The 800V electrical architecture supports BYD’s Flash Charging system, which can recharge the battery from 10% to 70% in just five minutes—an industry-leading capability that addresses one of the most persistent concerns about electric vehicle ownership.

The interior of the Denza Z reflects its premium positioning, featuring an 8.8-inch digital driver display and a 12.8-inch Google-integrated infotainment screen. The Coupe and Racing variants also include a 12-speaker “theater-grade” sound system, further emphasizing the car’s blend of performance and luxury.

Aggressive Pricing and Market Strategy

BYD’s pricing strategy for the Denza Z is designed to disrupt the high-end performance market. In the UK, the Coupe starts at £142,900, the Spider at £159,900, and the Racing variant at £172,900. These prices are significantly lower than those of comparable models from European automakers, such as the Porsche 911 Turbo S (starting at £199,100) and the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe.

In China, pre-orders for the Denza Z opened on July 12, with prices starting at 680,000 RMB ($100,000) for the Coupe, 780,000 RMB ($115,000) for the Spider, and 1.18 million RMB ($175,000) for the Racing variant. The lower prices in China reflect BYD’s strategy to establish a strong domestic foothold before expanding globally.

The Denza Z is slightly larger than the Porsche 911, with dimensions of 4,780 mm in length, 1,990 mm in width, and 1,350 mm in height, placing it closer in size to the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe. This positioning allows BYD to compete directly with these established brands while offering superior performance and advanced technology at a lower price point.

Global Expansion and Future Competition

BYD plans to begin customer deliveries of the Denza Z by the end of 2026, with sales expected to commence in late summer as the first Denza retail stores open. The company has not yet confirmed the full extent of its global availability, but the launch at Goodwood signals a clear intent to compete in Europe and other international markets.

The Denza Z enters a segment traditionally dominated by European automakers, including Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. While Tesla’s long-awaited Roadster remains delayed, the Denza Z’s immediate availability and competitive pricing could accelerate the shift toward high-performance electric vehicles. BYD’s entry into this space also raises questions about how established brands will respond to this new challenge, particularly as electric vehicle technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace.
