BYD’s luxury electric vehicle sub-brand, Denza, announced on July 12 that global pre-orders for its Denza Z electric supercar had surpassed 1,000 units within three days of opening in the UK and China. The milestone reflects strong early demand for the brand’s first high-performance model, which BYD positions as a direct competitor to established supercar manufacturers.
Pre-Orders Launch in UK and China, Pricing Reflects Market Strategies
The Denza Z made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 9, with pre-orders opening the same day in the UK at a starting price of £142,900 ($192,000). Two days later, on July 11, BYD launched pre-orders in China at 680,000 RMB ($100,000), less than half the UK price. The pricing disparity aligns with BYD’s strategy to prioritize volume in its domestic market while positioning the Denza Z as a premium offering in international markets.
Denza confirmed that all three variants—the Coupe, Spider, and Racing—were “selling well,” though the company did not provide a breakdown of pre-orders by region or model. Deliveries are scheduled to begin by the end of 2026, with BYD planning to expand pre-orders to additional markets throughout the year and into 2027.
Performance Specifications Target Supercar Segment
The Denza Z is built on BYD’s e3 platform and features a triple-motor powertrain delivering a combined 1,582 horsepower (1,604 PS) and 914 lb-ft (1,240 Nm) of torque. The Racing variant achieves a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time of 1.96 seconds when equipped with optional semi-slick tires, while the Coupe and Spider variants record times of 2.25 and 2.30 seconds, respectively. The Racing model’s top speed is rated at 217 mph (350 km/h).
BYD attributes the Denza Z’s performance to its 800V architecture and Flash Charging technology, which enables a recharge from 10% to 97% in nine minutes. The company describes the model as “the first electric supercar whose performance can be fully utilized without range or charging limitations.” All variants are powered by a 76 kWh BYD Blade Battery 2.0, with the Coupe offering a WLTP-rated range of 410 km (254 miles), while the Spider and Racing variants are rated at 400 km (248 miles) and 380 km (236 miles), respectively.
Technology and Design Features
The Denza Z incorporates several advanced technologies, including BYD’s DiSus-M intelligent damping system, which adjusts suspension viscosity in milliseconds using a magnetic field. The e3 platform also features a steer-by-wire system, eliminating the traditional steering column to enhance responsiveness. The vehicle’s dimensions—4,780 mm in length, 1,990 mm in width, and 1,350 mm in height—position it as a direct competitor to models like the Porsche 911, though BYD has not released independent verification of its performance claims.
The interior includes an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch center infotainment screen with Google integration. The steering wheel, designed with motorsport influences, features six physical buttons for quick access to functions such as Track and Boost modes. Premium audio systems are integrated into the headrests, with 12 speakers in the Coupe and Racing models and 10 in the Spider.
Market Positioning and Competitive Landscape
With a starting price of £142,900 ($192,000) in the UK, the Denza Z is positioned as a more affordable alternative to rivals like the Porsche 911 Turbo S, which starts at £199,100 ($266,500) and accelerates from 0-62 mph in 2.5 seconds. BYD aims to establish Denza as a global luxury brand, with the Z joining the existing Z9 GT and D9 in its international lineup.
While the Denza Z’s pre-order milestone signals strong initial interest, BYD has not disclosed production capacity or specific timelines for market expansions beyond the UK and China. The company’s claims regarding the model’s performance, charging speed, and technological innovations remain unverified by independent testing.
