15-Minute Fast-Charging Test: Full Breakdown of Range and Charging Performance
The 2027 BMW iX3 xDrive50 was recently subjected to a real-world road test by the YouTube channel Out of Spec Roaming to evaluate its fast-charging performance and highway range. The test team conducted a "10% challenge," depleting the vehicle’s battery to 10% before connecting it to a DC fast charger for 15 minutes. Immediately afterward, the vehicle was driven at a constant speed of 74 mph (120 km/h) on the highway until the battery returned to 10%. The results showed that after 15 minutes of charging, the iX3 could travel 148 miles, with an average energy efficiency of 2.56 miles per kWh (equivalent to 38.9 kWh per 100 miles).
This test aimed to simulate long-distance travel scenarios, assessing the vehicle’s real-world range capability after minimal charging time. During the test, the iX3 xDrive50 demonstrated impressive charging performance, with a peak charging power of 407 kW. It maintained charging power above 400 kW when the battery was below 20%, with an average charging power of 257 kW. After 15 minutes, the battery level rose from 10% to 65%, showcasing BMW’s leadership in fast-charging technology.
Charging Curve vs. Official Data: Tested Range Aligns with Expectations
BMW has stated that the 2027 iX3 xDrive50 has a battery capacity of 108 kWh. The company claims that charging from 10% to 80% takes 21 minutes and can deliver approximately 203 miles of highway range. When fully charged (100%), the official range is 291 miles. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates a combined range of 434 miles, covering mixed highway and city driving conditions. This differs significantly from the 148-mile result in this constant-speed highway test, highlighting the impact of driving conditions on range.
