Monthly Subscription Plan Launched with 29% Discount on Fast Charging

Arnold Clark Charge, the electric vehicle charging service of UK automotive retailer Arnold Clark, announced on August 14 that it has partnered with Octopus Electroverse to launch a monthly subscription plan. The plan offers a 29% discount on DC fast charging and is applicable to over 400 chargers across 60 locations operated by Arnold Clark Charge throughout the UK. The initiative aims to reduce the financial burden on EV drivers who rely on public charging.

Arnold Clark Charge currently operates more than 400 chargers in the UK, covering car dealerships, service centers, and public parking lots. While specific locations have not been disclosed, the company states that its charging network spans most major cities across the country. Subscribers will receive a 29% discount on the standard charging price through a monthly fee, though the exact monthly fee and the pre-discount standard price have not yet been announced.

High Public Charging Costs Driven by Tax Disparities

The UK government imposes a 20% value-added tax (VAT) on public charging services, compared to just 5% for home charging, resulting in significantly higher costs for public charging. Some EV drivers have noted that public charging prices far exceed home electricity rates, impacting their willingness to use public chargers. Arnold Clark Charge’s new discount plan primarily targets urban residents who cannot install home chargers, particularly those without private parking spaces.

In recent years, the UK has actively expanded its EV charging infrastructure, with curbside chargers and public charging stations continuing to increase. According to statistics from the UK Department for Transport, the total number of public chargers in the country surpassed 60,000 by June 2026. However, the high cost of charging remains a widespread concern among EV drivers. Arnold Clark Charge’s subscription plan is the first in the industry to offer a substantial discount specifically for fast-charging services, which could influence the pricing strategies of other charging providers.

Partnership Simplifies Payment Process as Officials Push for Electrification Transition

Octopus Electroverse, the EV charging service platform under Octopus Energy Group, provides integrated payment and discount solutions across multiple charging networks. Through its partnership with Arnold Clark Charge, discounts will be offered via the Electroverse platform, streamlining the payment process for users. Pablo Levi, Group Sustainability Manager at Arnold Clark, stated, "Making EV charging more affordable and accessible is key to supporting the UK’s transition to electric vehicles. Through our collaboration with Octopus Electroverse, we are providing drivers with a simple way to reduce the cost of public charging without compromising on speed or convenience."

As the UK’s 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles approaches, the affordability and accessibility of public charging networks will play a crucial role in the adoption of electric vehicles. Arnold Clark Charge emphasizes that its new subscription plan will help accelerate EV adoption, particularly for users who cannot install home chargers. While the subscription eligibility criteria and projected user numbers have not been disclosed, industry observers believe the initiative could accelerate the growth of the UK’s EV market.
