Zoox, the autonomous driving subsidiary of Amazon, officially launched the first paid self-driving ride-hailing service in the U.S. in Las Vegas on August 11, marking a new milestone in the commercialization of autonomous taxis. Zoox vehicles are purpose-built for driverless operation, featuring no steering wheel or pedals and accommodating up to four passengers in a face-to-face seating configuration. Currently, approximately 65 Zoox autonomous vehicles are operating on the streets of Las Vegas, while the company’s factory in California has increased its daily production capacity to five to six vehicles to meet expanding service demands.

Zoox CEO Aicha Evans stated that the launch of the paid service signifies the conclusion of a three-year free trial program that began in Las Vegas in 2023. She noted that the number of paid passengers is comparable to that during the free trial phase, indicating stable market acceptance. Evans emphasized that Zoox will continue to optimize its systems through software, firmware, and simulation testing to ensure operational transparency and safety.

Safety Incident Prompts System-Wide Upgrade

In June of this year, a Zoox autonomous vehicle entered a fire emergency scene with heavy smoke in Las Vegas. While no injuries were reported, the incident raised concerns about the safety of self-driving cars. On the day of the service launch, Evans described the event as an extremely rare edge case and confirmed that the company had swiftly initiated a software recall and system update to enhance the vehicle’s response capabilities in emergency situations. She stressed that autonomous vehicles must safely interact with first responders to avoid potential risks to public safety and publicly endorsed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) regulatory requirements for the self-driving vehicle industry.

Evans further explained that Zoox has optimized its systems for various extreme scenarios through simulation testing and real-world road tests, ensuring stable operation in complex environments. She emphasized that the company will continue collaborating with regulatory agencies to ensure the development of autonomous vehicle technology aligns with public safety standards.

Unique Vehicle Design and Phased Expansion Plans

Zoox’s autonomous vehicles feature a distinctive design, eliminating traditional driving interfaces. The interior is configured with face-to-face seating to prioritize passenger comfort and space efficiency.
